Goal Setting

How to Handle a Lack of Progress

This might be the most important blog I’ve ever written and here’s why.

Progress is required to become your Best You

Without progress there is lack of motivation.

Without progress people we can tend to have a downward spiral and never achieve anything we set out to do.

But so many of us will inevitably have periods of time where our progress stagnates.

And sometimes that’s okay if we’re not technically looking to make much progress.

But there are plenty of times when we’re hoping to make progress and we’ve hit a plateau.

So, let’s say that’s you right now. You’ve been working out consistently but you aren’t making the progress you want to.

Maybe your body looks the same; you’re not building any muscle, or you’re not losing any more weight.

I get it, NOTHING is more infuriating than not see the progress you want.

I have five tips for how you can evaluate your lack of progress and how to change break through your plateau.

Let’s get started.

Tip #1: Your weekly goals are right conceptually but you aren’t dialing in a right dosage. Let’s say you are trying to lose weight, and you are working out three times a week. Well, maybe you notice that even though you’re working out and eating healthy, you aren’t making the progress. You can try to work out four times a week. Setting the right dosage will make a HUGE impact.

Tip #2: Are you lying to yourself? I’ve heard, “Coach I’ve stopped losing weight” and we will talk about the workouts they’re doing, and ask what it looks like. Normally, it’ll be ten minutes of moseying, using the wrong weights- etc. They’re checking off the box but it is not being used effectively. Is what you’re doing ACTUALLY what you need to do?

Tip #3: Is there something you are not factoring in? Maybe you aren’t factoring in your stress, your alcohol intake, your sweet intake, there are a lot of things you may want to start considering when thinking about your progress and goals.

Tip #4: Actions and results are not always related to time and space. I have seen so many people lose their progress and motivation because their goal was to lose 10 pounds in ten weeks and they lost 6. You might not have reached your goal, but you LOST 6 pounds, and it is only going to keep getting better if you stay the course.

Tip #5: Change from a finite mindset to an infinite mindset. Just because you're not seeing progress now, doesn't mean you should stop exercising or stop eating healthy. Luckily the one thing that is different about the game of health compared to other games is that it never ends! Yes, while some of us set goals to be achieved by a particular date, the journey of health is never ending. Stay the course, and always be growth-focused rather than outcome-focused

Remember to be curious with a lack of progress rather than critical!
