How Do You Form Habits That Stick - Part 2

The only reason I’m consistent is…

Do you want to be more consistent?

Do you want to form habits that stick?

I was washing the dishes the other day after lunch and thought, man I’m sore!

My upper body was really sore – my arms, my chest, my back were all sore – because I had been working out hard over the preceding days.

And I had a moment of gratitude for feeling sore. I am legitimately thankful to be in pain. And I started thinking about that…

Because it’s kind of a weird thing to be thankful for…I'm thankful to be in pain…

And I’m not the only one who has ever expressed that feeling. I’ve had countless clients express to me about how they love being sore. About how it feels good to be sore and how they’re thankful for being sore.

So, I asked myself, why is that? Why am I thankful to be sore? Why am I thankful to be in pain?

Why are my clients thankful to be sore? Why are they thankful to be a pain?

Shouldn’t that be a pain in the ass to be in pain?

And then I asked myself, what is soreness?

Soreness is a sense of progress.

Why do people like being sore?

Because they feel they’re making progress.

The first takeaway here is that pain precedes progress.

You don’t get to make progress until you put a little skin in the game.

You don’t get closer to your potential by not stretching yourself and doing something that gets you out of your comfort zone.

Now, this doesn’t mean that you need to go inflict meaningless pain upon yourself. That’s not what I’m talking about here.

I’m talking about meaningful pain.

I’m talking about pain that directly comes from you doing something you know you should do but it was hard for you to do but then you did it and you feel the sense of progress from it.

The second massive takeaway is that we are thankful for progress.

We feel a sense of gratitude, a sense of appreciation, and a sense of thankfulness when we feel like we’re getting closer to the person we were meant to become.

When we feel like we’re making progress on our potential, we feel positive emotion and motivation because of it.

A good next question is how can we get more of that?

How can we, more frequently, feel the sense of progress?

How can we, more frequently, feel motivated?

1. Always have a goal

Make sure you’ve always identified something that you’re trying to work towards because you can’t make progress until you know what you’re working towards.

Yes, a prerequisite to motivation is progress.

A prerequisite to progress is having something to progress towards.

You can’t get closer to something you haven’t identified.

Along with having a goal, the next thing to stay motivated is to:

2. Have a means through which you track progress.

When it comes to being consistent and forming habits that stick, we need a feedback loop.

We can’t expect ourselves to continue habits for a long period of time if we don’t feel like the habits are making us any progress.

In order for those habits to give us a sense of progress, we need to see progress and feel progress.
The way I like to do this is by creating scoreboards.

I write things down that I’m trying to accomplish every year, every quarter, every week, and every day.

That’s the secret to my consistency – having a scoreboard that provides me with a sense of progress.

Do you want to be more consistent?

Do you want to form habits that stick?

Create a scoreboard for yourself.

Create a scoreboard that provides you with a feedback loop.

Create a scoreboard that provides you with a sense of progress.

That scoreboard should contain:
1. Your Why
2. Your Specific Goal
3. Your Weekly Goals

If you can keep your why top of mind, monitor progress towards your overall goal, and worry about controlling the process with your weekly goals, then you'll be well on your way to staying consistent.

You'll be well on your way to making those habits stick.

During the 10-Week Transformation, everyone creates a scoreboard to provide them with motivation and a sense of progress.

We all want the feeling that we are making progress in the pursuit of our potential.

A scoreboard is a great way to provide tangible evidence of that progress.

It’ll provide us with thankfulness, motivation, and appreciation for the pain, sacrifice, and discomfort that progress requires.
