How To Not Gain Holiday Weight

Most Americans gain 5-15 lbs during the last 3 months of the year.

With Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas being back to back to back, it’s no mystery as to why.

Now that we’re in the home stretch of Q4 - 1 more month left - how can we be sure to finish strong? How do we avoid the 5-10 lb weight gain? How can we finish 2023 on a high note?

Because so many of you have been doing SO well throughout the entire year and you don’t want to throw it all away during this last month.

Most people let the holiday season get the best of them and go into January feeling frustrated with how they look and feel.

They’re regretful of their actions.

But not you.

Be different.

Be better than that.

Because if you’re reading this blog, you are better than that.

I’m going to talk you through why most people gain 5-10 lbs and how you can be different - how you can avoid the weight gain and either maintain your weight or maybe even lose some.

How To Avoid Weight Gain And
Achieve Health Throughout The Holidays

1. Holiday Parties

There are no shortages of white elephants, ugly Christmas sweater parties, secret Santas, and other parties that go on during the last month of the year.

Most of these parties are centered around food and alcohol.

And there’s nothing wrong with that. I love these parties. I love food, and I drink alcohol.

But, there’s a way to approach it so that it doesn’t cause you to gain weight.

Here are a few tips to give you an intentional and mindful approach to these holiday parties:

1. Workout that day.
2. Eat a healthy meal before going.
3. Avoid the BS store bought Christmas cookies that, let’s be honest, aren’t even very good.
4. Go in with an alcohol game plan. Stick to 1, 2, or 3 drinks/cocktails. Or whatever number is most appropriate for you.
5. Eat the protein and veggies first.
6. Sit down with a plate to eat. Don’t graze.
7. Don’t fall into peer pressure. Most people gain 5-10 lbs in December. Don’t be like most people.

Pick one or multiple of the above that work best for you and apply them on a case by case basis.

2. "Gifts"

One of the things that grinds my gears most during the holiday season is how many people give out unhealthy sweets as “gifts.”

I put “gifts” in parentheses because for me personally, it’s not a gift. I don’t look forward to that. I throw it away (most of the time).

Now, if someone takes the time to bake me something or do it homemade, I’ll most likely eat it. If it’s good.

If it’s store bought, no chance. It’s going to the trash can.

But most of us feel bad about “wasting” food. Most of us feel guilty if we throw it in the trash.

Don’t.

You’ll feel more guilty when you wake up on January 1st having added on the 10lbs that you spent the whole year losing!

Most people receive these holiday sweets and treats and finish them all. Don’t be like most people.

If it’s homemade, go for it. That’s my rule at least.

If it’s not, throw it away. Or if you “have to have some”…have 1, then throw it away.

3. Exercise Schedule

During the holiday season, our schedule gets thrown out of whack. Our work schedules are different, the kids are out of school, and we’re staying up later than normal at parties.

All of these factors cause us to slip out of a normal routine because we don’t have the same structure.

Don’t slip out of your routine.

Create structure for yourself.

If you’re not going to work, still set a time to exercise just like you normally would.

If the kids are out of school, still set a time to go to the grocery store and meal prep like you normally would.

A lack of structure and routine is a real obstacle to hitting your goals.

So, give yourself some structure and routine.

Most people say, “I just struggle with no routine during the holiday season.”

“I just can’t stay consistent if I don’t have structure.”

Don’t be like most people.

Keep some sort of routine.

Give yourself some structure.

The number on the scale will thank you for it and you’ll keep your sanity a whole lot better when the in-laws are in town.

Conclusion

Don’t be like most people.

If you’re reading this blog, you’re already different than most people.

But now you have to show it.

Now you have to execute. Because all of the things I’ve listed are much easier said than done.

But I know you, and you got this.

I know you’re determined to go into 2024 looking and feeling great.

Be committed. That’s what it takes.

Don’t hope to be healthier during this holiday season. Hoping won’t get you there.

Commit to being healthier and you will be.
